World Series of Baseball game Seven
...tonight, live and in person, barring inclement weather, and I must say i'm pretty excited, especially after last night's grand performance full of heroics. Who will be the one who steps up tonight, at 8:05 pm EST, at Busch stadium in St. Louis? Which team will get to meet the President, and which team will be like the Rangers of last year: runners up, just League champions?

Did you ever hear someone singing to themselves, think their voice absolutely angelic, and comment to them thusly? I'm always suprised by how often people deflect this type of complement away with replys like '...not really' or 'i wish'; sometimes they'll just get red, stop singing and change the subject.
It's ok. Not everyone knows how to take a complement. But I believe we're here on this earth to encourage others and to build each other up. Regardless of how they respond (or don't respond).

Another great sports day...
College football, Wings, World Series, ... steaks on the grill with french fries, ...
After the 1968 baseball season,
the height of the pitcher's mound was lowered from 15 to 10 inches. ERA shot up and so did ball game scores. Sluggers like Clemente, Powell, Robinson, Jackson, McCovey, Aaron, Kilibrew, Carew were hitting; oh, were they hitting.
Batting average went up from .237 to .248, homers from 1995 to 3119, runs per game from 3.42 to 4.07.

'there's two kindsa people in the world, ...'
...having trouble putting my thoughts into meaningful sentences right now...
It's funny how you think you just can't stand certain characteristics of a person, but you overlook them sometimes.
My grandpa Walter Frank (Wally, to his friends; we didn't call him that until we were older, quite older for real) told me once that everyone's got three things about them you're just not gonna like. If you can look past those three things, the person's really not that bad.
I have a hard time with this. If there's some absolutely obnoxious characteristic about a person, I don't like to be around that person. (This sounds trite, small.)

And thank you, Team Detroit, for a great summer, for always giving me something to look forward to as I grilled hot dogs, chicken, or pork with my beautiful wife.

and now, finally, I can whole-heartedly engage myself in conversation and thought involving our beloved Red Wings, Lions, Pistons.
The Tigers' 2011 season has ended, tantalizingly lengthy as it was, and now I can move on. I will keep up on the rest of the the playoffs, as well as the off season moves and talks-of-moves, but, for a time, there will be no more looking forward. No more the daily anticipation of how the starting pitching will do tonight, who's gonna be the batting hero, who's gonna be the goat everyone curses and wants traded on 97.1 and in the 'blogs. No more texts from my brother telling me how he likes Doug, no more visits to that grand park downtown with its smell of polish dogs and almonds roasting. No more will i cut the grass, water the flowers, veggies, and herbs, install kitchen cabinets, retrieve a yard-sale refrigerator, and entertain the Nielson people for hours, knowing that, at the end of the day, there will be Dan Dickerson and Jim Price, right after "The Jim Leeland Show". No more will dinner time be determined by game-time, no more will my moods be determined by a the outcome of a game. (Well, that probably won't change much, it'll just be different types of games :-).
So, as i sit on my bed and type, with the NFL Sunday Ticket in full effect, I am able to segue into a new season, a new time of year. And listen to how God is helping me during this transitional phase:
MSU and Michigan (in that order:-)are on top in the Legends Division, Ohio State is on the bottom of the Leaders Division!
Our beloved Lions are tied for first in the NFC North with the Packers and have won their first five games, including a Monday night victory over the Bears last week.
The Wings have started their season well also, on top of the Central Division, 4-0 with 8 points.
Other thoughts...

Other thoughts...
- One thing I don't like about watching NFL games is the long delays for reviews. Absolutely it was a shitty addition to the game. Let the refs make the calls, they do a fine job. If you just have to let the video be part of the picture, let some morons watch all the film they want so they can find which refs are missing calls more consistently. Fine them or remove them based on the evidence, but LET THE PLAYERS PLAY!
- The Spartan's success has really helped me with my end-of-the-year baseball withdrawals. The only smudge to their season so far was the loss to Notre Dame (who lost to Michigan just the previous week). Great victory over Michigan yestreday...probably my best birthday present so far!!

Why is life good?

I listen to the call-in shows and read the comments on the m-live and mlb.com articles...local folks like to complain about their own teams. (I realize this is a generalization, but it comes after years of i) living in Detroit, ii) driving back and forth listening to many and varied sports stations, including the Chicago, Milwaukee, and Green Bay markets, and iii) just talking to lots of folks about sports :-)
SO, i won't be one of THOSE PEOPLE and focus on the fact that the three dingers were solo shots AND that Lewis led the universe in giving up dingers this year, solo or otherwise.
I will remain in the positive sphere, keeping my eyes fixed on the Author and Perfector of my faith, WHO was and WHO is, and WHO is to come!!!

One walk, no harm in the fourth, Texiera hit one hard to left. 2-2.Easy fourth for CC. Avila struck out again, looks like Inge from the other side of the plate, wiffing harmlessly.

Fister looks good again tonight, his pitches are working and the late movement is tremendous. Been watching cooking shows and perusing cooking webs and I really, really, long to cook right now...

...on the eve of the weekend
Thursday night and I have eaten well, and all is good in the world.
I'm taking a day of from sports of any kind, satisfying my lust for action-suspense with Salt. I could only top this by catching Inception (would you like to take a leap of faith, or die an old man, filled with regret, waiting to die alone?) or Inglorious Basterds (the reason for Hugo Stiglitz's celebrity among German soldiers is simple: he killed 13 german gestapo officers...). Megamind would give me a little different kind of satisfaction (could this day get any more funtastic?!), Zombieland (rule #3, doube tap), quite another.

Tigers are .500 since the winning streak and a half-game behind the Rangers for home field in the first round of the playoffs.
and now it's Sunday with 3 games left; all at home, all with the Indians, all at 7:05.

I still don't have a vehicle to drive and frankly, I'm blest to be able to get everywhere i need to go (except to see my bride 8-( ... but God is good and we have so much to be thankful for!
To-day in my morning classes, we laughed hard; laughter is such good medicine for us ... it was good.
My sweetie starts her fall job to-day in ann arbor.
The Tigers start their final home stand tonight with four against the Orioles and finish with three against the Indians. Remember when everybody was looking forward to this last series as if it was going to decide the AL Central?!? They're only tied with Texas right now for home field advantage in the first round; they could pass the Yankees for home field in the ALCS but it's going to be tough. Exciting times for this team to be sure.

The 2011-2012 school year has begun!
...and I find myself once again in Bear Lake, Michigan, drinking Diet Mountain Dew on my landlord's front porch with a mild breeze caressing my water-soft skin in 78 degrees of sunshine. Wednesday has been designated as my night to cook so, as I patiently wait for the dough to rise, I'm typing a bit here.
We have Rold Gold pretzel rods and expensive Tostitos cheese-like dip to munch on, I just put a huge pizza in the oven, and still I look in the cupboard and fantasize about how good the Kraft Extreme Cheese Explosion with Bigger Shapes! macaroni and cheese will taste next to my pizza. I have issues; Lord have mercy.

25th of July is when the board votes on whether we will be called back from our layoffs or not...i'm not even worried about it, yo. I'm having the time of my life doing all these projects with my sweetie and I'm in no big hurry to go back up north. If they vote against, well, God will provide...He always does.
Shout out to little brother, little sister, their families, and mom and dad enjoying the Big Lake this week up north and down south I'm told!

ooooooh it's only 80 to-day!!!
...but glorious sunshine and a wonderful breeze are always welcome!
I remember riding behind my dad on his street legal Yamaha 250 Enduro on/off-road motorcycle when I was in grade school. The only instructions for me: lean into the turn. Easy enough. I would clasp my hands together at his belly and just trust...enjoying the wind in my face and the scenery as a passenger. He taught me the hand signals you should always use for turning, stopping, etc (especially if your lights didn't work); but he also taught me the coolest thing about riding. You saluted fellow bikers as you crossed paths with them. Not really a wave as in "Hi, neighbour, isn't the weather great?!?"; not even a greeting at all; more of an acknowledgement. Like, "I see you, fellow biker." I used to love that part of riding so much. Whether the guy was on a huge Harley or a more modest Honda, we always waved to each other.
It was with this in mind as I drove down M-36 in my trusty Ram 1500 behind a man on a mid-size motorcycle, and we came to an intersection. (I'm not sure of the integrity of that sentence, structure-wise). As we passed through, there was another guy on a hog in oncoming traffic waiting to turn left. When we passed him, I specifically looked to see whether either of these two knew the old customs. ... Nothing. No acknowledgement, no salute, no sign of camaraderie. The guy turning left kept his stone face eyes straight ahead with an unadulterated stare; I'm assuming the guy I was behind did the same.
It's ok, I wasn't sad, like when I saw one swan standing by the road next to an obliterated ball of white feathers that presumeably was its mate; I guess it's just a sign of the times.
My task to-day: be more friendly!

Sweetie went shopping early then we got everything out of the kitchen. Painted walls and tiled to back bedroom. Completed phase one, living room is almost done. Kitchen tile tomorrow; i have two boxes left.

Me and the Missus rode out to Menards and found lots of fun things:..before that we picked out cabinets from the Home Depot in Brighton. Sweetie changed her mind again but these are 20% off the clearance so we're excited.
60" island, 35" sink, 2" cabinets, 18" cabinet next to the stove, and our lazy susanne for the corner. Also, the all-in-one sink for $174 more doing, that's the power of the Home Depot.
Feeling weird lateley, but i can get back on my water pills to take the swelling out of my leg/ankle/foot. Ate alot to-day but i'm humgry at 10:45 hmmm....

I am clean and scraped of face and well fet. I have slept soundly and am greeted by the morning-birds-who-love-to-sing (and who are all naturally sopranos). There is gas in the vehicles and beer in the fridge; the grass is cut (courtesy of my new Weedeater, with the Briggs and Stratton Engine), and the world is awakening.
I have been tiling the living room mostly, for the better part of three days, also some trim and such. Everything has glue on it, the floor is frightfully uneven, but I'm blessed to be able to use my hands to better our home.
Time for Uncle Herschel!

Sweetie is off to-day but this time she let me sleep in and took laundry to Brighton. I started painting the living room and hall walls and cielings. Twiggy green and cozy cottage! I also got the kitchen and long hall ceiling done. So, ceilings are done except for bedrooms and bathrooms.
Cleaned my brushes, put my tools away, and enjoyed burgers and salad with my bride.
Clean clothes, a ful belly, a JV two0hetter, cold Nattys, and Nick Jonas crooning...life is good.

Sweetie was off yestreday so we had an early Dragon Court breakfast and then off to Home Depot for paint and then pricing cabinets and sinks. Painted interior walls and ceilings, patched some walls...
Up early this morning for a Hamburg Coney breakfast (where the food is fast, hot , and good) then back home to await the Nielson people (shhh....). Chemire, Dave, and the heavily-scented woman made sure we were ok. Then back to Home Depot for a gallon of the ceiling paint to replace the gallon I spilled yestreday. Then to Lowes to price cabinets.
We also picked out a white enamel sink and cool ass faucet that will match our copper back splash material. Ate White Castle snack between box-store visits.

Friday that week...
Cable is all hooked up and we also had our Nielson interview. After that, we explored the far-off land of Ikea for what seemed like ever, but we got good ideas and almost made an impulsive buy for the kitchen. Had a balanced Ikea meal and then home to Mario and Rod and the Hi Def Tigers. JV was again stellar (leads MLB in "quality" starts) and Avila and Boesch provided the pop. Hod some salad before bed (along with tons of chips) but my leg seems to be doing better.
Met Sweetie at Hamburg Coney (where the food is fast and hot) and sent her off to work with a list in my hand! To Krogers first then build a slo-cook pot roast. Si and me are on the deck listening to Nirvana and life is good. Will come up with lots of distractions to avoid going under the trailer, but this is my fate. And sure my fate will be the same as mine. Cool, cool breezy night (glorious sleep)
By the time I'm up at 6, the birds have long been up and Si is ready to be out. She's quiet now, enjoying the wood decking like I enjoy a baby-boomer era sealy posturepedic with a couple of comforters and my feather pillow. Boy am I spoiled?!?

First Day Home Wednesday
Ate breakfast with my sweetie at Hamburg Coney (where the food is fast and good) then kissed her off to work. Hot hot hot...ordered cable (Charter) and began the Master Bedroom Breaker project. Began also the Slider Screen project and finished it, praise God! Cleaned out the shed also.
It stayed cooler in side than out doors until evening when it got up to 92 inside except our bedroom was cool with the little window air unit (-8. We hung a sheet in the doorway to keep the cool in, cooked brats; sweety got home about Tiger-time and we talked in the cool of the bedroom til the game ended (finally, ... lost to Texas )-8) Slept well in the air next to my sweetie.

We fed ourselves well tonight on asparagus, potato salad and pork.I made only my second batch of potato salad ever and it turned out so good, with the help of foodnetwork.com. Landlord's grill never dissapoints; we used roasted garlic in the marinade on the pork...melted in the mouth.
Papa Grande is one big hotdog, Miggy is like a big kid always smiling and having fun. They're fun to watch, especially while eating well.

Exams, Day 3
Friday.
Last day for students of the 2010-2011 school year.
One of the school board members just bought me breakfast and reminded me to save room: his wife was bringing in a cake to celebrate a colleague's retirement.
There is no more real coffee near the staff pot, only decaf...yuk.
Dropkick Murphys make up for the lack of caffeine. (I still don't know how to spell that word.)
There is an aid that works with the special ed kids in my morning math class. She was willing to take the darling 8th graders to the gym, God bless her.

Exams, Day 2
FST is the affectionate, shortened version of the title for this course; it stands for Functions, Statistics, and Trigonometry, and one can clearly see the reason for the desire for some sort of abbreviation. The remaining scholars have begun the measly three-page test; seniors have already departed weeks ago and three scholars asked to take this exam early for various reasons. One girl just stopped showing up months ago. The room is silent save for the muted sound of my typing (not the clickety click stupid noises computers make in the movies) and random sniffles and coughs. These juniors have all recently presented a lesson for their fourth quarter project and done wonderfully...to-day we will see how much they remember and can regurgitate. Nice kids, all. Trudy is brilliant and asks questions about things days before we 'cover' them in class.Danny is polite and mostly quiet but will laugh insanely at any spontaneous random time. Chicken moved up here from New Mexico and has made friends with everyone by virtue of his friendly demeanour and quick wit. He's quite a gifted scholar also. Ni-Ca is quiet but asks real good questions and is one of those tough students to read because she never responds after I answer the question...like " oh, ok, i get it" or "ooooo don't get it, try again", or even "i'm sorry, your ridiculous choice of color combinations in your outfit really distracted me, could you repeat that?", ... something, please!!
Bradly is a great thinker but tries too hard with the puns sometimes. He's got himself the King of all Calculators and has taught himself a good deal about how to use it when doing functions, trigonometry, and (of course) statistics. Tyrone would rather be somewhere else and lets me know this daily, in spite of a decent math's aptitude. I made him promise if he got through this year in good shape that he'd never take a math class with me again. Madjesty is brilliant and asks tough questions that I can't answer sometimes. She used to get mad when she didn't understand something (kind of like how I do when there's no more pizza left, or if the Tiger bullpen gives up a game), but she's been more civil of late. Justly is a runner and really nice. She used to come get help like every morning before school and the grades reflected her increased labors. Amity is also very bright and could teach this class but occasionally just doesn't do an assignment or two. (I've found this to be the case with brilliant folks as well as with folk of average intelligence: we all choose to be either lazy or dilligent, and some of us choose both!). Lindy is studious, pays attention to detail, and is fun-loving. The work she turns in is some of the best in the class. Bile is another extremely gifted mathematician but is extremely lazy. He consistently does the absolute minimal to get by, but can get average grades without really trying (which seems to satisfy him to no end). I look forward to working with most of these scholars in the future, Lord willing.

...last week of school
I'm sitting at one of the desks in the K-12 office waiting for copies of the geometry final i'm giving tomorrow. The desk used to belong to one of the secretaries here; she now is working down at the other end of the building for our Superintendent (may he live forever). So this desk is cleared off now, except for my HP EliteBook 8540p, and it's weird. The copier in the Student Services office (SS) is not unlike the 'main' copier that most of the high- and middle-school staff has been using for the past several years, and is now being phased out by a newer, slicker model from another company. The newer, slicker model has been a wonderful beast of burden for us all (it'll staple a big old test wherever the hell you want it to!) for the past few weeks undoubtedly. To-day, though, I noticed some symptoms that were not unlike symptoms Robby the Robot began exhibiting when the Robinsons thought he was all that. I was making copies of my Advanced Algebra exam, a meager single-sided 7 pages (compare to the 19 page double-sided bitch for Geometry =) and right about the end of the jam, what do ya know but the Alert! beeps begin chirping and the Danger! display shows me the 27 spots where there are papers jammed inside. Now I'm no rocket scientist, but should a brand stinking new machine be jamming in 27 places after only a couple o' weeks work?!? So I follows the directions as best I can and tries to remove all the paper. It took about 1500 opening and slamming parts of this machine I had no business exploring, but finally I heard an agreeable hum and away she started again. (It must be said that the whole 'fixin it' process took about 12 minutes or so...enough time to get me breathing hard, cursing loudly, and sweating profusely.)
After one more complete copy damn if the beeps didn't start again and here we were all jammed up like logs on the Mississippi. But this time, I knows what I'm doing - I'm virtually an old pro!!! - so I begin the loathsome ritual once again, this time taking only seven or eight minutes. The paper was hot, but not streaked. There are other options, I remind myself, and ponder this for future jobs.
It's time, now, to photocopy the big-ass Geometry final. Options: retry the new, slick, recently-twiced-jammed lounge copier, remove to the Media Center (where there are way fewer jams, but the copies come complete with streaked black artwork non necessarily budgeted for which has, in the past, obstructed the actual print on the pages), or really remove to the Student Services Office, where I hear tell that copier NEVER jams.
You don't have to guess which option I chose, and my little rambling herein is the result. 20 perfect copies all in the time it took to type this!! Praise God!!!

Our Wings peppered the goal in the first period tonight, looking alot like the Sharks in every other game. I always say keep it up and they'll start going in! Absolutely love seeing them boys bunt for a base hit every now and again. Inge needs to learn to do this, I am sure. But Rhymes, Jackson, Santiago have all attempted it recently and I say darnitall it's about time!
Porcello's effort last night was all but stellar.
There were some bright spots in the most recent (Sunday's) loss: Raburn's catch running hard to his backhand side in the corner deep, Avilla's continued hitting, Coke's maintaining his composure and getting himself out of trouble.

On movies
Cats and Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore makes me laugh out loud. I have lived most of my life as either a cat or dog's person (often both) and find their facial expressions and comments so funny in this film.Thank you, Brad Peyton, for going so anti-hollywood by leaving out every asinine sexual reference, thank you.
Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Charles Laughton and Maureen O'hara is superb. Completed during "Hollywood's Greatest Year" (along with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, and Wuthering Heights), 'tis a tale of Beauty and the Beast set in 15th century Paris. The final line of the film just floored me: Quasimodo, while watching the beautiful Esmeralda, whose life he saved, ride off into the sunset with her husband, inquires of the gargoyle he leans against: "Why was I not made of stone like thee?" Brought me to tears.

Detroit opened in the Bronx, an instant classic already in the eyes (and mouths) of Those Who Know: Justin Verlander and his less than 1.0 spring ERA and the Thumpin Tigers against the pinstriped Yankees with Cy Young CC Sabathia on the hill. JV threw alot of pitches early but kept the Tigers in the game by allowing 3 runs through six innings of work. He seemed to be getting ahead in the count, but had trouble putting folks away like we would have liked him to (8 K, 4 BB, 3 ER = 4.5 ERA); in the end though, the bullpen didn't do its job. Phil Coke replaced JV in the 7th and immediately gave up the game-winning dinger to Curtis Granderson..
Trends to watch: We'll see if the tumultuous RISP continues from last year (1-7); runners LOB was also quite bad as I recall (6, yestreday).

Did my online bracket at CBSsports.com and am folloiwing day one even as I type. Got to listen to Huge yestreday on the way down to Lansing for a rally. The sun was shining and it was a nice drive both ways. Got to listen to MCC beat Leland for the Regional basketball title in Cadillac.
Crazy day at work to-day. Several substitute workers in the building and the kids know what's up with that. Richmond tryin to bracket-bust my Vanderbuilt...and it's done.

My pre-game festivities began with a four hour nap preceded by TCM's Conquest, with Charles Boyer and Greta Garbo. My cardio consisted of filling my water bottles and placing them on Grandpa's table outside, so the water gets cold. We've been getting some rainy-icy-snowy stuff all day; very little but enought to cover the dirty snow that's been accumulating for about a week.
The search for my Steelers t-shirt was unfruitful. As it is, I shall have to wear an un-comely oversized grey pocketed T and my Spartan hat backward.
My sweetie is at her parents enjoying Super Festivities while rooting for the Steelers.

first weekend in February
Saturday yestreday up early to get a Burger King breakfast and an oil change from the kid who wears a Math Matters t-shirt ... i just love it!!Then to kmart for some good Snyders pretzel chunks and to school to do some work. Graded quizzies and planned for next week and cleaned and organized a bit. Home to take a shot and then back to Manistee for prescription, haircut, and mass. My landlord made some amazing pulled pork sandwiches and I fell asleep dreaming about my sweetie so far away...I miss you babe...

already being hailed as the Blizzard of 2011,
this system is a real hum dinger! Already over 600 closings and delays in the Detroit area and not quite 50 already for tomorrow up here... It's cold and windy here in Bear Lake, MI, but no real accumulation of snow yet.
Made a pot of chicken minestrone on saturday last and about a cup left for tomorrow. Worked out yestreday after our workday in Manistee and sweated a bunch. Today after work back down to Manistee for prescriptions and some mcdonalds (foul!). May not have to go to work tomorrow but we'll see!
